We started at the waterline.
Harbor & Bloom began on a stretch of northern coast where the tide goes out a long way and comes back slowly. Everything since has kept that pace.
A shed with better light than it deserved.
The first thing we made was a cleansing balm, and we made it because the winter here is hard on skin and the shops sold either a miracle or a hospital. We wanted the third thing: something ordinary, made well, that you could use every night without deciding to.
There was a field of calendula behind the shed. Someone else’s field, at first. We asked. We still buy from them, and the flowers still come in the back door in a basket.
The recipe has barely changed. What took years was learning to make it in quantities larger than a kitchen pot without losing what made the kitchen pot worth copying. It is a duller story than the first one, and the one that actually explains the company.
Three numbers explain most of it.
None of them is a marketing figure. They are just how long things take, and they are why there is never very much of anything at once.
One morning
the harvest
Calendula is picked by hand and goes into the base oil the same day. Flowers that sit overnight lose the thing we picked them for, so the harvest is timed to the workshop rather than to the calendar.
Three weeks
the steep
Whole petals rest in that oil for three weeks. No heat, no hurrying it along. It is where the Meadow Cleansing Balm gets its color, and it is the reason we can only make so much of it at a time.
Twelve months
the shelf
Twelve months from opening is the longest we will claim, and several formulas are shorter. The mineral veil is six. The number goes on the box, not in the fine print, and the batches stay small enough that it is an easy promise to keep.
Skincare you can keep.
A ritual only works if you actually do it. Ours is five minutes, morning and evening, and we would rather you keep a short one than abandon a long one. That single idea decides most of what we make and nearly everything we refuse to say.
- Every ingredient is named on the label, including the ones nobody puts on the front.
- No formula here undoes a year. We say renewal because that is the honest word for what it does.
- A short shelf on purpose. We would rather improve one of the eight than add a ninth.
- Nothing is ever discontinued to make you hurry.
And then it goes through a person.
We do not sell from a warehouse to a stranger. Every order at Harbor & Bloom belongs to a consultant: someone who has used the balm through a winter and can tell you whether it is the one you want, or whether you wanted the mist all along.
Consultants keep their own shops, film short PopStreams showing how a product actually goes on, and a couple of the sets exist nowhere but the shop of the consultant who put them together. It is a slower way to sell skincare. It is also the only way we know to answer a question properly.
